Animation of the Tafjord tsunami
One of the tasks in this project was to create an animation of the tsunami after the catastrophic landslide in Tafjord in Western Norway in 1934.
Photo of Tafjord a few years after the tragedy. The slide scar is seen in the background as the light area down to the fjord.
The animation shows a back-calculation of the Tafjord tsunami on the 7th of April 1934. The rock slide volume was about 3.0 million cubic meters including the mobilized screen below (1.5 million cubic meters). The tsunami height (run-up) close to the slide area was above 60 m and up to 15 m in the small village of Tafjord 6 km southeast.
In the animation, Tafjord is marked with a red rectangle in the left panel with run-up calculations in the right panel. Totally 41 persons were killed by the tsunami.
