The INITIATOR project lends itself to the ChEESE project - Center of Excellence of Exascale in Solid Earth funded by Horizon 2020 (H2020) where NGI was a partner. In ChEESE, emphasis is given to the natural hazards relating to earthquakes, volcanoes, and tsunamis.
A fundamental goal in ChEESE is developing applications that can utilize larger supercomputing resources in the future (Exascale computing). A unique aspect of ChEESE is the application of cutting-edge technology to solve fundamental societal challenges that have previously been out of reach.
In Norway it is of particular importance to accelerate the development of codes that can utilize our largest supercomputing resources in modeling hazardous landslide tsunamis in several Norwegian fjords, a topic not covered in ChEESE.
Activities in INITIATOR include:
- provision of visualization and presentation material
- popular news articles and dissemination
- workshop directed toward scientists, stakeholders, and HPC actors
The activities of INITIATOR have interacted with other Norwegian actors within:
- scientists working within natural hazards
- groups working with HPC
- end-users
- high schools
