WP3 – Upscaling: field application

Theoretical approach and methodology

Limited research on the field performance of alternative materials to stabilize soils exist. Full‐scale research will unlock vital information about the behavior of soil stabilized by industry by‐products and their impact on soil stabilization execution. The application of non-destructive monitoring such as fiber optic sensing will set a precedence to measure spatial temporal changes in stabilized soil and in reliably measuring the in‐situ properties of stabilized soils.

The findings from WP1 will be used to design three approximately 150 m2 field trials at the NGTS Onsøy and Tiller‐Flotten.

Throughout the soil stabilization, the execution parameters will be recorded. After mixing, the stabilized soil will be instrumented using optical fibers. Monitoring data will then be acquired using DFOS and S‐wave velocity measurements (WP4). For each of the three field tests, ten samples of the stabilized soil will be taken at and subsequently tested in the laboratory to quantify their mechanical properties and compare the data to those obtained in the field (WP4).
